Amy’s Monte Cristo Sandwich

So maybe you have some eggs in the house, some cold cuts, and bread. What can you make? A Monte Cristo. It sounds fancy, but it’s super easy! πŸ˜‰

It’s kind of like french toast with some protein.

My sandwich was made with ham and swiss, but you can use any deli meat with a variety of cheeses. Some recommended… havarti, or gruyere πŸ™‚

What you need:

Sliced Onion

Milk or cream

Whole Nutmeg (to grate)

Cold Cuts

In a fry pan grill up your onion in some butter. Now for the sandwich, I prefer to use a loaf of bread, either french, brioche, or sourdough, but it’s up to you. Slice two pieces of the loaf and prepare a sandwich layering your meats and cheeses. Once your onion is grilled you can add those as well. Spread on some mayo and close the sandwich.

For the batter, beat one egg with a tablespoon of cream or milk. Freshly grate a teaspoon of nutmeg and Β a teaspoon of onion powder. This is the secret here πŸ˜‰ It makes it taste so great!! Mix it all together and set aside.

In a fry pan heat up a little butter on med. heat so it is nice and melted. Dip the entire sandwich into the batter, sides and all…it’s like putting your sandwich in an egg bath πŸ™‚

Make sure you drain off any excess batter though. Then place into the fry pan.

Press down the sandwich with a spatula so the cheese and meat compress together like a grilled cheese or panini. After 3 minutes flip over.

Wait another couple of minutes and it should be cooked through. For a sweeter version you can use brioche, carmelized onions, and serve with a raspberry or strawberry jam on the side for dipping. Top with a sprinkle of powdered sugar, yummmmm πŸ˜‰

During the holidays you can also make the same sandwich using your leftover turkey and serve it with a homemade cranberry sauce on the side.

I hope you enjoy!
