Sweet and Savory Lentils Served over Brown Bread…

These lentils are amazing! They are cooked with sweet and savory ingredients hitting every taste bud in a symphony of flavors. I served them over a piece of brown bread like they would in the old days. The bread sops up all of the delicious sauce. This is perfect for someone on a budget or a vegetarian. I think this is a fun dish to experiment with so I am going to just list out the ingredients with some rough measurements.

Amy’s Sweet and Savory Lentils

  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1-1/2 cups cooked lentils (purchase Trader Joe’s)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons Grade A maple syrup
  • Jamaican curry powder (sub. cinnamon, coriander, ground mustard.)
  • ground cloves
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • cumin
  • chili powder
  • onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon brown sugar
  • salt
  • brown bread

In a pan add in a tablespoon of butter. Saute the onion. Add in the cumin, Jamaican curry powder, brown sugar, and a dash of salt. Add in the other tablespoon of butter.

Next add in the lentils and gently stir.

Pour in the milk and add in the remaining spices. Hit it with another dash of the Jamaican curry powder. Stir and place a cover on top for a few minutes.

Lastly, hit with the maple syrup, Tabasco, and Worcestershire sauce.

Heat on low for another few minutes and serve over some brown bread. Yummy 😀
